Lawyer Bobby Banson has placed Sarkodie at the head of his older-generation category in a selection of Ghana’s greatest rappers, recognizing artists across two eras of the country’s rap scene.
His assessment considers consistency, longevity, commercial success, technical ability and cultural influence, reflecting the different ways musicians have contributed to Ghanaian rap and hiplife.
According to reports, Banson’s older-generation selection also features Omar Sterling, Okyeame Kwame, Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour and Lord Kenya.
The category brings together performers whose careers represent different stages in the development of Ghanaian rap, with Sarkodie taking the leading position in Banson’s assessment.
For the younger generation, the lawyer named Medikal, Kweku Smoke, Strongman and Lyrical Joe among his standout acts. Separating the artists into two groups allowed him to recognise performers working in different periods of the music industry.
The selections have sparked discussion on social media about the qualities that should determine a rapper’s greatness. The debate centers on how lyrical ability and career longevity should be weighed against commercial performance and streaming popularity.
Banson’s list adds another perspective to the continuing conversation about Ghana’s most influential rap voices and the contributions of both established stars and contemporary performers.
