Afriyie Barnieh’s Brace Sends Aarau Past Former Club Zurich in Swiss Cup

Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored twice against his former club as FC Aarau defeated FC Zurich 2-0 to reach the Swiss Cup Round of 16 on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The Ghanaian forward delivered both goals in the second half at a sold-out Stadion Brügglifeld, helping the lower-division side eliminate their top-flight opponents.

After a closely contested opening half ended goalless, Barnieh broke the deadlock in the 65th minute. Left unmarked at a corner, he headed home to give Aarau the advantage.

The 25-year-old struck again in the 80th minute, finding the bottom left corner with a fine long-range effort to put the hosts firmly in control.

Zurich’s hopes of recovering suffered a further setback when Reichmuth received a second yellow card and was sent off late in the game. Aarau preserved their two-goal lead to complete the upset, making Zurich the first Swiss Super League club to exit this season’s competition.

The result carried added significance for Barnieh, who spent two and a half years at Zurich before joining Aarau in the summer of 2025. His two goals against his former employers matched his entire scoring return across 50 appearances for the club.

The brace lifted Barnieh’s tally for the season to three goals, alongside two assists, providing a boost to his campaign as Aarau secured their place in the last 16.
