Customs officials have intercepted an assault rifle, two pistols and 610 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a consignment at the Golden Jubilee Terminal of Tema Port.
The shipment, which arrived from the United States, had been declared as personal effects, according to officials.
The discovery was made at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2026, during a routine inspection by two Customs officers.
After identifying irregularities in the cargo, the officers subjected it to a more detailed physical examination. They uncovered the three firearms, ammunition and additional firearm-related accessories.
Officials said the weapons and ammunition had neither been declared nor supported by valid import documentation.
The seized items were subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.
Briefing the media on Monday, September 28, the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of Communication and Public Affairs, Mrs. Florence Asante, attributed the interception to strengthened security procedures at the country’s major seaports.
She said enhanced intelligence gathering, cargo scanning and rigorous physical inspections formed part of measures aimed at detecting concealed weapons and preventing arms smuggling into Ghana.
