Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has called on musician Mzbel to provide additional information to assist in investigating claims that her relative died after allegedly being unable to secure a hospital bed.
The request follows a video circulating on social media in which Mzbel alleged that her relative lost their life because there was no bed available at the hospital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the hospital’s management said it was treating the allegation with the utmost seriousness and had made efforts to contact Mzbel and her family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the hospital, the investigation seeks to determine whether the patient arrived at Korle Bu and was denied admission due to a lack of beds, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred and was instead advised to wait until a bed became available.
Management said it had not yet been able to engage directly with the bereaved family and appealed to Mzbel to provide the necessary details to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the claims.
The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to the government’s policy that no public health facility should turn away emergency patients. It noted that the directive, announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address and reiterated by the Minister for Health, remains fully in effect.
Korle Bu further disclosed that its governing board has acquired additional hospital beds and other essential equipment to help ease pressure on existing facilities. It added that all clinical and emergency units have been repeatedly reminded of their responsibility to provide emergency medical care in accordance with national policy.
The management emphasized that any intentional refusal to provide emergency treatment would constitute a serious violation of hospital policy and would be thoroughly investigated.
The hospital also encouraged patients and their families to report complaints through its official channels, including dedicated telephone lines, the hospital’s online complaints portal and QR codes displayed throughout the facility, to enable prompt investigation and resolution.
Korle Bu extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that it remains committed to carrying out a fair, transparent and professional investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
