One person has been confirmed dead, while two others remain in critical condition following a head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a tipper truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a search for the driver of the fuel tanker, whose whereabouts remain unknown after the crash.
Speaking to journalists at the scene, GNFS Public Relations Officer, DO II Ebenezer Yenzu, said emergency response teams were working to clear wreckage from the roadway, manage traffic congestion, and ensure safety along the busy motorway.
He noted that firefighters were also washing the road surface to prevent accidents caused by fuel spills and debris during the recovery operation.
“We estimate that the exercise should have been completed by about 11:30 a.m., but the severity of the impact has made recovery more challenging. Some of the locking mechanisms are not decoupling, so we have had to adopt alternative methods to move the vehicles,” he explained.
According to Mr Yenzu, the driver of the tipper truck lost his life in the collision. Three other individuals were involved in the accident and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
“One person died in the incident, and that was the driver of the tipper truck. He is the only fatality recorded so far. Three other persons sustained injuries and were taken to hospital,” he said.
He added that one of the injured victims has since been treated and discharged, while the remaining two continue to receive medical care. The injured were initially transported to the General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Mr Yenzu further disclosed that authorities have not yet located the driver of the fuel tanker and are working to establish his whereabouts.
Although investigations are still ongoing, he indicated that preliminary assessments suggest a possible lane deviation may have caused the collision.
“At this stage, I do not want to speculate. However, from a technical assessment of the scene, it appears one of the vehicles may have strayed into the wrong lane, resulting in the head-on collision,” he stated.
Emergency personnel remain at the scene as recovery efforts continue to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow along the Accra–Tema Motorway.
