Three people, including a four-year-old girl, have been confirmed dead following hours of intense rainfall that triggered flash floods across several parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

Ella Esiman Nongo, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, confirmed the fatalities during an interview with Citi FM on Monday morning. She said the victims died in separate incidents within the municipality.

In Lakeside, we lost two people—one of them a four-year-old girl in Nanakrom—and another gentleman near New Legon,” Madam Nongo stated.

The torrential rains began around 3:00 p.m. and continued for nearly three hours, causing widespread flooding. Roads were submerged, vehicles stranded, and properties damaged across several communities, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and parts of Tema.

The Odaw drain, a major stormwater channel through central Accra, overflowed due to the heavy rains, exacerbating flooding in nearby areas.

Emergency teams were dispatched throughout the city. Madam Nongo confirmed that most stranded residents in Ashiyie were rescued by Sunday night. However, damage in many neighborhoods was severe, and residents in flood-prone areas remain vulnerable.

One of our biggest challenges is people building on waterways, leaving no proper drainage path when it rains,” she noted, calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations.

Madam Nongo urged urgent government action and a renewed commitment to addressing the structural and environmental issues behind Accra’s persistent flooding problem.
