The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, together with the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has conducted a site inspection for the construction of the National Defence University (NDU) at Teshie on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

The visit marks a significant step in advancing the establishment of the university, which is expected to become a key institution for military education and training in Ghana.

During the inspection, the ministers outlined several important developments aimed at ensuring the successful execution of the project. The government has allocated GH¢25 million as seed funding under the 2026 GETFund formula to support the initial phase of construction. This funding is intended to lay the groundwork for the university’s infrastructure and operations.

In addition, Haruna Iddrisu disclosed that John Dramani Mahama has directed the submission of a bill to Parliament to establish the legal framework for the university. This legislative step is expected to formalize the institution and define its mandate.

The National Defence University is designed to integrate various defence-related colleges into a unified system. It will serve not only the military but also other security agencies, including the Police and Prisons Services, thereby strengthening coordination and professional development across Ghana’s security sector.

Plans are also underway to expand the university’s curriculum to include emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, ensuring that training programs align with evolving global security trends.

The inspection team included several high-ranking military and government officials, among them William Agyapong, Chief of the Defence Staff; Felix Adom Asante, President of the National Defence University; Charles Kweku Budu-Kumi, Chief Coordinator of the NDU; and Jonas Agyei Wiafe, Director of Engineer Services.

The project is expected to establish a center of excellence in military education and research, contributing significantly to both national and regional security.
