Experienced coach Ken Augustt has backed a potential return of Kwasi Appiah as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars, as the search intensifies for a replacement for Otto Addo following his recent dismissal.
Augustt believes Ghana’s ambitions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup require a coach with proven tournament experience, describing Appiah as the most suitable candidate for the role at this critical time.
Appiah’s track record remains a key factor in the endorsement. He made history as the first indigenous coach to lead Ghana to the FIFA World Cup in 2014, an achievement that continues to strengthen his credentials. Augustt also pointed to Appiah’s familiarity with many players in the current Black Stars squad, arguing that this would allow for a smooth transition and immediate impact without the need for a prolonged adjustment period.
He further described Appiah as a pragmatic choice, particularly for a short-term assignment focused on guiding the team through the upcoming global tournament.
The coaching search, however, has sparked widespread debate within Ghana’s football community. Appiah is currently managing Sudan and has enjoyed notable success, including leading the team to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at Ghana’s expense. Reports suggest the Sudan Football Association could be willing to release him specifically for Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
While Augustt supports Appiah’s return, other voices have expressed reservations. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has cautioned against reappointing the coach, citing concerns over how he was treated during his previous tenure.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association is also considering other high-profile candidates, including Hervé Renard, Pitso Mosimane, and Tom Saintfiet.
Ghana is scheduled to open its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 17, 2026, with a match against Panama, adding urgency to the decision-making process.
