Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has called on the Ghana national football team to maintain a strong internal focus as they continue preparations for major international competitions, stressing that success depends primarily on the team’s own standards and performance.
Speaking ahead of key fixtures earlier in the qualification campaign, Ofei emphasized that while opponents such as the Chad national football team and the Madagascar national football team presented tactical uncertainties due to recent coaching changes, Ghana possessed sufficient quality within its squad to secure results. According to him, the team’s priority should be self-assessment and consistency rather than over-focusing on opponents.
Ofei acknowledged that the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was a deeply disappointing moment for the team and its supporters. He described the setback as “very painful” but noted that it has fueled renewed determination within the technical setup. He stressed that both players and staff are committed to correcting past mistakes through discipline, preparation, and improved performances on and off the pitch.
Under the leadership of head coach Otto Addo and technical advisor Winfried Schäfer, the team has undertaken a comprehensive review of its operations. This includes enhancements to training facilities, greater use of video analysis, and broader technical improvements aimed at raising overall performance levels. The goal, according to Ofei, is to build a more competitive and resilient squad capable of delivering consistent results at the highest level.
He also made a strong appeal to supporters to rally behind the team, particularly during matches at the Accra Sports Stadium. Ofei highlighted the importance of fan support in rebuilding confidence and restoring the strong bond between the national team and its followers.
Ghana’s campaign ultimately proved successful, as the Black Stars secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The team finished top of Group I with 25 points, sealing their place with a crucial 1-0 victory over the Comoros national football team in Accra.
With qualification secured, attention now shifts to preparations for the tournament itself, including the official World Cup draw scheduled to take place on December 5 in Washington, D.C. The focus for the technical team will be on refining tactics, strengthening squad depth, and ensuring readiness for the global stage.
Ofei’s current role reflects a strategic adjustment within Ghana’s football structure. Having previously led the Ghana U-20 national team to a gold medal at the 2023 African Games, he transitioned in mid-2025 to concentrate fully on his duties with the senior national team. The move was aimed at streamlining the technical department and reinforcing the Black Stars’ long-term competitiveness.
As Ghana prepares for the World Cup, Ofei’s message remains clear: sustained success will depend not just on talent, but on unity, discipline, and a relentless focus on internal improvement.
