Accra susceptible to flooding – GMeT

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning indicating that Accra, the country’s capital, is susceptible to flooding when rainfall exceeds 50 millimetres. This caution comes in the wake of a recent downpour last Friday, which resulted in significant flooding in various parts of Accra.

Areas such as the Tema Motorway, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, North Kaneshie, Alajo, Adabraka, Accra Central, Tema, Tema station-Accra, Osu, and others experienced severe flooding after nearly an hour of rainfall. This inundation caused houses and cars to be submerged, drainage systems to overflow, and road potholes to expand and deepen.

Joseph Portuphy, the Head of Forecasting at the GMeT, explained that the recorded rainfall during this event was 78 millimetres, which accounted for the extensive flooding witnessed across the city. He emphasized that Accra is vulnerable to flooding whenever rainfall surpasses the 50-millimetre threshold within a span of two to three hours.

Mr. Portuphy also pointed out that although Accra is currently experiencing the minor rainy season, the rainfall is expected to be heavy, suggesting that such incidents may recur.
