Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been elected as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
His nomination was formally presented by Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during a parliamentary session on January 7, 2025. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin seconded the motion but voiced concerns about President-elect John Mahama’s involvement in nominating Bagbin, suggesting it might reflect an overreach of executive powers.
With no opposing candidate from the Minority caucus, the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, officially declared Bagbin elected.
“There being no other nomination, I declare Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin duly elected as Speaker,” Djietror announced.
Following the declaration, Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonno administered the oath of office, formally swearing Bagbin in as Speaker of the 9th Parliament.
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is a seasoned Ghanaian politician and lawyer. He served as Ghana’s Minister for Health from January 2012 to February 2013 and represented the Nadowli West constituency in the Upper West Region across the 1st to the 7th Parliaments of the Fourth Republic.
Notably, he was the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, a role in which he demonstrated extensive expertise and leadership. His deep experience in governance is expected to play a pivotal role in steering Parliament through this critical phase of Ghana’s legislative and democratic evolution.
