Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed the introduction of a national cultural dress initiative in schools aimed at promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage among learners.
Dubbed “Our Day,” the initiative would encourage students across basic and secondary schools to wear traditional attire that reflects their ethnic and cultural backgrounds on a designated day. According to the Minister, the move is intended to deepen cultural awareness, foster national pride, and reconnect young people with Ghanaian values and traditions.
Speaking at a public event, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of using education as a platform to celebrate cultural diversity, noting that schools play a critical role in shaping identity and social cohesion. He said the initiative would allow learners to appreciate not only their own heritage but also that of others.
The proposed cultural wear day is expected to complement existing civic and cultural education programs, offering a practical and visual way for students to engage with Ghana’s traditions. Education stakeholders have described the idea as a positive step toward preserving cultural identity in an increasingly globalized world.
While the proposal has generated public interest, the Ministry of Education has indicated that consultations will be held with key stakeholders, including school authorities and parents, before any formal implementation. Further details on timelines and guidelines are expected in due course.
