African airlines have recorded the strongest growth in the global aviation industry in early 2026, leading all regions in both international passenger demand and air cargo performance, according to data from the International Air Transport Association.
International passenger demand for African carriers increased by 11.7 percent compared with the same period last year. Overall passenger demand, including both domestic and international travel, grew by 17.9 percent. Airline capacity on international routes also expanded by 10.1 percent, while the average load factor reached 77.4 percent, representing an improvement of 1.1 percentage points compared with 2025.
The region also experienced strong growth in air cargo. Cargo demand among African airlines surged by 18.2 percent year-on-year, the fastest growth rate among all global regions. Cargo capacity increased by 6.5 percent during the same period. Much of this expansion was driven by rising trade between Africa and Asia, with the Africa–Asia trade corridor recording a sharp 41.6 percent increase in cargo demand.
Africa’s 11.7 percent growth in international passenger demand significantly exceeded the global aviation average of about 5.9 percent. However, despite the rapid growth, the continent still represents only around 2 percent of total global aviation traffic.
Industry analysts attribute the strong performance to several factors, including expanding trade links with Asian markets, the recovery of tourism across many African destinations, and gradual improvements in regional air connectivity.
Among major airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, the continent’s largest carrier, reported strong financial results. The airline announced revenues of $4.4 billion for the first half of its 2025–2026 financial year, representing a 14 percent increase compared with the previous year.
Despite the positive momentum, industry observers caution that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and fluctuations in global fuel prices could create uncertainty for airlines later in 2026. Even so, forward schedule data suggests global airline seat capacity will continue expanding, with a projected increase of about 5.2 percent by March 2026.
