The National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are set to convene on Wednesday, December 6, to deliberate on potential running mates for the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The primary objective of this meeting is to identify suitable candidates who can collaborate with Dr. Bawumia in the bid to secure victory in the upcoming election and “break the eight” – a reference to the party’s desire to win a third consecutive term.

Several names, including Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, are under careful consideration, as per multiple sources.

The NEC is expected to make a decision on these candidates before formally presenting their recommendations to the National Council. This process aligns with the NPP’s Constitution, which mandates the nomination of a running mate 12 months before a major election.

While various names are in the running, some experts have tipped Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the frontrunner. They highlight his impressive support for Dr. Bawumia in the presidential primaries, securing over 88.5% of votes in the Manhyia South constituency.

However, reports suggest that certain NPP MPs in the Ashanti region have raised objections to considering Dr. Opoku Prempeh. Allegedly, at a secret meeting, these lawmakers accused him of supporting the defeat of some MPs during the party’s 2020 Parliamentary Primary.
