Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated the Christina Akua Brago Diawuo Library and Technology Hub in Akim Oda, Eastern Region, alongside the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
During the event, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of digitalization and the need to prepare Ghanaian youth for global competition. The technology hub is named in honor of Diawuo’s mother. It is intended to support the Ghanaian government’s effort to digitize all sectors of the economy by equipping young people with ICT skills.
The facility is equipped with a Huawei Idea Hub and will provide virtual learning experiences and connections to students worldwide. The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Huawei Ghana, MTN Ghana, and the Ghana Library Authority funded the project. GIFEC’s administrator, Prince Ofosu Sefah, believes the technology hub will reduce the digital divide between rural and urban populations in Ghana and positively impact education, health, commerce, agriculture, and entertainment.
GIFEC has established ICT laboratories for over 947 primary and senior high schools since 2017 to improve the teaching and learning of ICT, trained about 17,000 people in various ICT programs, and facilitated the Girls in ICT Program, which has trained nearly 8,000 girls and 800 teachers.
Huawei’s Director of Enterprise Business, Brian Wulang, expressed the company’s excitement to take part in an initiative to promote digital literacy and empower youth to unlock their potential.
