The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah-Dame, has called on the public to dismiss the accusations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against him, labeling them as “baseless and lacking merit.”

The NDC, on Monday, October 16, encouraged the Ghanaian people to reject a recent legal opinion provided by Godfred Dame regarding the report authored by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee against Illegal Mining (IMCIM). During a press conference led by the National Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC alleged that the Attorney-General’s advice, which referred to certain sections of the report as lacking evidence, was merely an attempt to cover up and gloss over the damning report. The opposition party further characterized his legal advice as “a feeble attempt to conceal.”

Mr. Yeboah-Dame, however, has refuted these allegations in a statement, asserting that he cannot recommend the prosecution of individuals in the absence of evidence. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and prosecuting all wrongdoers, regardless of their political affiliation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, Mr. Yeboah-Dame contended that the NDC’s accusations are nothing more than a desperate effort to mask their own inability to combat the galamsey (illegal mining) problem during their time in power. He stated, “In spite of a multitude of allegations and invectives spewed on me by the Communications Officer of the NDC, not a single piece of evidence was provided by the NDC to substantiate any allegations made by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng against any individuals named in his report. The entire NDC’s press conference was, in fact, tainted by a fraudulent attempt to justify their premeditated falsehoods and insults against me, as they are accustomed to doing.”

He went on to say, “The unfounded allegation that I am involved in an effort to conceal crimes allegedly committed by them is therefore bewildering, questionable, and deceitful at best. I view that press conference by the NDC as merely the latest in a series of attacks on me for decisions made in the normal course of my duties as Attorney-General, which that political party perceives as detrimental to its interests.”

Mr. Yeboah-Dame respectfully urged the public to disregard the discredited assertions of the NDC as lacking merit and credibility. He emphasized that it is a miscarriage of justice to prosecute individuals for crimes in the absence of evidence, citing the reason why the Office of the Attorney-General did not prosecute either Prof. Frimpong-Boateng or his son, Jojo Frimpong-Boateng, in response to allegations by the Adansiman Progressive Association that they were heavily involved in illegal mining (galamsey).
