The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) plans to settle debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) once the IPPs fulfill their part of the agreement.
Following successful discussions with the ECG, the Chamber of Independent Power Producers has suspended a nationwide power cut.
Since July 1, the ECG has been progressing in its negotiations with the IPPs to settle the debts, according to Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of the ECG.
During an interview with Citi News, Mahama thanked the IPPs for engaging in discussions. The ECG made an offer, which the IPPs are currently reviewing. The ECG plans to collaborate with security agencies for a door-to-door exercise to identify customers using electricity without any consumption history. This initiative aims to address the revenue shortfall caused by unidentified consumers. The ECG is considering involving security agencies to ensure the effectiveness of the exercise. As per Mahama’s statement, a specific date for the start of this exercise will be announced soon, possibly within a week or less.
