The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has officially implemented the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), starting today. This legislation imposes a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles. The introduction of the Emissions Levy aligns with the government’s commitment to address greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly technology and green energy.

The levy amounts vary depending on the type of vehicle and its engine capacity. Motorcycles and tricycles are obligated to pay GH₵75 annually, while motor vehicles, buses, and coaches with up to 3000 cubic centimeters are required to pay GH₵150 per annum. Vehicles, buses, and coaches exceeding 3000 cubic centimeters, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks are subject to an annual fee of GH₵300.

In response to the imposed emissions levy, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) leadership has indicated plans to announce revised transport fares. Abbas Imoro, the Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, emphasized that the union had alerted the public about the challenges of paying two different fees for the same item. Despite this, the GPRTU has not yet finalized any adjustments in lorry fares but assured that any decisions made would be calculated and shared transparently with passengers.
