The passing of legendary Ghanaian musician Ebo Taylor was confirmed on Sunday, February 8, 2026, by his son, Kweku Taylor, in a heartfelt Facebook tribute.

In his message, Kweku Taylor described his father as a towering figure in African music, noting that he died just a day after the launch of the Ebo Taylor Music Festival and exactly one month after celebrating his 90th birthday. He wrote that his father’s artistic legacy remains unmatched and that his influence will continue to shine long after his passing.

Ebo Taylor was widely recognised as one of Ghana’s most influential musicians, whose contribution to the development of highlife and Afrobeat shaped the direction of African music for decades. A highly skilled guitarist, composer, and arranger, he played a significant role in the Afrobeat movement during the 1960s and 1970s, collaborating with some of the continent’s most respected musical pioneers.

For more than sixty years, Taylor remained actively involved in music, performing on international stages and producing songs that resonated with audiences across different generations. His lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting African musical identity earned him global admiration and established him as one of Ghana’s most respected cultural ambassadors.

Ebo Taylor’s legacy is deeply embedded in Ghana’s musical history and continues to influence emerging artists across Africa and beyond. He is survived by his family, as well as countless fans and admirers around the world who celebrate his enduring contribution to African music.
