Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has clarified that he has no immediate plans to seek additional funding from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), contrary to recent media speculation.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson addressed the misrepresentation of his earlier remarks.
“I did not say I would request additional financing from the IMF. That is an inaccurate portrayal. What I said was that such a request could be made if the need arises,” he clarified.
He emphasized that his earlier comments were speculative and depended on potential future developments, highlighting the importance of maintaining flexibility in managing the country’s economic affairs. While additional IMF support is not currently planned, he noted it could be considered if warranted by circumstances.
Dr. Forson called on the media to exercise caution in reporting his statements to avoid creating unnecessary public confusion or misinterpretation.
Reaffirming his commitment to sound financial management, he pledged to explore all viable options to maintain economic stability and ensure sustainable growth.
His clarification follows reports suggesting that the new administration might pursue extra funding from the IMF under Ghana’s ongoing three-year program with the lender.
