Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH8719 has made history as the first international flight to land at Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, the capital of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The flight touched down on Friday, December 6, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m.
The arrival marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to expand its air transportation network, particularly for regions outside the capital, Accra.
The historic occasion was celebrated with vibrant drumming and dancing, as traditional leaders from the Kumasi Metropolis gathered at the airport to warmly welcome the travelers.
This landmark flight is part of a broader initiative to position Kumasi as a vital transportation hub within Ghana. However, it comes after a slight adjustment to the original schedule. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) had initially announced the first direct flight from London Gatwick to Kumasi for December 3, 2024, but a last-minute change delayed the inaugural landing. The GACL attributed the delay to short notice in preparations.
Despite the eventual success of the first flight, the rescheduling sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some Ghanaians celebrated the development, others expressed skepticism, with rumors circulating about the authenticity of the announcement before the flight’s arrival.
The launch of international flights to Prempeh I International Airport underscores Kumasi’s growing importance in Ghana’s air travel infrastructure and highlights the nation’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and regional development.
