Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has defended her appointment to the 9th Council of State, stating that it aligns with constitutional provisions.

Akuffo was among the 31 newly appointed members of the advisory body sworn in by President John Mahama on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Her selection has sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning the implications of her role.

Addressing concerns about her appointment, she clarified that she is serving as an independent member and not as a representative of the judiciary.

“I am a former Chief Justice, am I not? Do I or do I not qualify? Many people actually expected me to be selected,” she remarked while speaking to journalists after the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House.

She further emphasized that her role on the Council of State is to provide honest and objective advice rather than simply endorsing decisions.

“The Council of State is meant to advise the president. I am not here to be a mere echo of his views. An adviser does not parrot,” she asserted.

“An adviser speaks with honesty and considers not only the interests of the person they are advising but also the responsibilities of that office,” she added, assuring the public of her commitment to transparency and integrity in her new role.
