President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at the government’s intention to legalize motorbikes and tricycles, commonly known as “Okada”, for commercial passenger transport.

During his State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, Mahama explained that the decision was driven by the practicality of motorcycles as a mode of transportation.

“Motorcycles and tricycles, commonly known as ‘Okada,’ hold significant potential as a more convenient, timely, safe, and cost-effective mode of transportation,” he stated.

He noted that while the Road Traffic Regulations of 2012 (L.I. 2180) currently prohibit licensing motorcycles and tricycles for fare-paying passengers, his administration plans to revise the regulations to allow their use in commercial transport.

Mahama also highlighted the crucial role of road networks in Ghana’s economy, emphasizing that over 90% of the nation’s goods and services rely on roads for transportation.

However, he acknowledged the deterioration of road infrastructure, pointing out that the percentage of roads in poor condition increased from 46% in 2015 to 57% in 2021, especially in urban areas.

Despite facing GH¢105 billion in ongoing road project commitments, Mahama assured that the NDC government remains committed to prioritizing critical infrastructure projects to address the country’s road challenges.
