Private security personnel have been sternly warned by the National Elections Security Taskforce, led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare, not to interfere with state security operations before, during, or after the elections scheduled for Saturday.
Vigilante groups, often linked to political figures as personal security, have been implicated in violent incidents during previous elections in Ghana. Addressing this issue, IGP Dampare underscored the state’s commitment to ensuring peaceful and orderly elections.
Speaking at a meeting with the Association of Private Security Organizations, he made it clear that state security agencies alone are responsible for overseeing election security.
“The responsibility of providing security lies solely with state security agencies,” he emphasized. “We don’t want a situation where the average Ghanaian voter feels confused or intimidated by the presence of unauthorized personnel in uniform, which could deter them from casting their votes.”
He assured voters of their safety, saying, “To the people of Ghana, we want you to know that we’ve got your back. Our measures are designed to ensure you can confidently walk into polling stations to vote peacefully, free from intimidation.
“We are here for you, for all political parties, and their candidates. The systems we are putting in place aim to build trust and confidence for everyone involved. There is no need for any political entity or individual to provide their own security because we are fully in charge”.
