Jean Mensa is not immune to the law- A PLUS

Kwame Asare-Obeng, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Constituency, widely known as Kwame A Plus, has issued a stern warning to Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, asserting that she is not immune to the law.

Kwame A Plus accused Jean Mensa of hypocrisy, criticizing her for allegedly seeking constitutional protection despite her role in the dismissal of her predecessor, Charlotte Osei. He argued that Jean Mensa benefited from what he described as a politically motivated decision orchestrated by the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He pointed out that former President Nana Akufo-Addo, after invoking constitutional provisions to remove Charlotte Osei, subsequently appointed Jean Mensa to head the Commission, a move he claimed was politically convenient.

“After using the Constitution to sack Charlotte Osei, Akufo-Addo replaced her with Jean Mensa, who allegedly played a role in her removal,” he stated. “And now, she wants to be protected by the same Constitution that humiliated someone else for her benefit.”

Kwame A Plus’ warning comes amidst circulating rumors that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, might remove Jean Mensa from office.

In a fiery Facebook post, the MP slammed the EC Chairperson as “hypocritical,” suggesting that if she had any sense of accountability, she would have stepped down voluntarily.

“Madam, you are not a special human being,” he wrote. “The NDC is also going to look inside that same Constitution and get back to you!”

Kwame A Plus also revisited the controversial dismissal of Charlotte Osei, the former EC Chairperson, in June 2018. Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwa, were removed from office following a recommendation by a committee set up by then-Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo under Article 146(4) of the Constitution.

The committee cited procurement breaches and financial malfeasance as reasons for their dismissal, a move that sparked widespread debate.

Following Osei’s removal, Jean Mensa, then Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), was sworn in by President Akufo-Addo as the new EC Chairperson. She was joined by Samuel Tettey and Dr. Eric Asare Bossman as deputy chairpersons, and Ms. Adwoa Asuama Abrefa as a member of the Commission.

Kwame A Plus’ recent comments highlight the ongoing political tensions surrounding Jean Mensa’s leadership and reflect broader debates about the impartiality and independence of the Electoral Commission.
