The Widows Association in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency of Greater Accra has strongly condemned recent accusations made by John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, against Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the sitting Member of Parliament and Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.

Mr. Dumelo, during a TV3 broadcast, alleged that Madam Alhassan was responsible for her late husband’s death.

In a statement dated August 29, 2024, the Widows Association described Mr. Dumelo’s remarks as deplorable, baseless, and deeply hurtful to all widows and women across the country, particularly to Madam Alhassan. The association argued that such comments undermine the dignity of widows, who already face significant social and emotional challenges after losing their spouses.

The association also commended Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan for her remarkable resilience in overcoming personal tragedy and continuing her service as a dedicated public servant. They highlighted her exemplary leadership as Deputy Majority Chief Whip in the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, as well as her contributions to the people and the nation.

“Madam Alhassan, as a widow, has become a symbol of empowerment, demonstrating that women can rise to positions of influence and serve their communities with integrity and commitment despite adversity,” the statement noted.

The association further emphasized that Ghanaian cultural values are grounded in respect, empathy, and compassion, particularly towards widows who deserve support and understanding. They asserted that Mr. Dumelo’s comments represent a betrayal of these values and a departure from the decency and respect that should characterize public discourse.
