Koforidua High Court issues bench Warrant for Arrest of MP

The High Court in Koforidua has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

The ruling follows Kumi’s defiance of an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator. Despite the court’s directive to refrain from assuming the parliamentary role until a legal dispute was resolved, Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe issued the bench warrant after Kumi failed to appear in court for sentencing.

The injunction was initially granted in response to a legal challenge filed by National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate Henry Boakye Yiadom against the Electoral Commission (EC), Ernest Kumi, and the Clerk of Parliament, effectively halting Kumi’s swearing-in ceremony.
