Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has expressed strong disapproval of former President John Mahama’s “deeply disheartening” comments regarding the candidates’ performance in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Mr. Mahama recently asserted that collusion, cheating, and inadequate oversight were the factors behind the outstanding 2023 WASSCE results, considered some of the best in nearly a decade.
Addressing reporters at Akim Anyinase, Mr. Nkrumah stated, “It is disheartening to witness how former President Mahama will go to great lengths to diminish the Free SHS program and its results simply because it didn’t originate from him.”
According to the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Mr. Mahama’s remarks were “shocking and disappointing.”
“While he may not endorse the entire SHS program, he shouldn’t strive so hard to disparage the beneficiaries. Although the program may have some challenges, to claim that even the exceptional success of the students is fake is truly astounding,” remarked Mr. Oppong Nkrumah.
Mr. Mahama has consistently raised concerns about the Free SHS policy and has made various commitments to reform it if he were to reassume office.
