Legendary actress Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, was honored at the 2024 Ghana Women Awards held on Sunday, October 6, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
Maame Dokono has captivated Ghanaian audiences for over five decades with her outstanding acting in movies and drama performances. She became a household name as the face of Ghana’s most popular television drama series, Akan Drama, and the lead actress in the Obra Drama Group. The iconic mother of six has also appeared in over 50 films. Her beloved storytelling show, By the Fireside, especially resonated with younger viewers, who eagerly awaited each new episode.
Beyond acting, Maame Dokono hosted several influential radio and television talk shows, focusing on social and human rights issues. She also ventured into music, releasing three albums. Her deep compassion for the vulnerable led her to establish the Peace and Love Orphanage, which cares for orphans and underprivileged children in Ghana.
The Ghana Women Awards, organized by Brein Consult, has, for the past 15 years, celebrated the accomplishments of outstanding Ghanaian women across various sectors, inspiring others to strive for excellence.
During her acceptance speech, Maame Dokono expressed her heartfelt gratitude, reflecting on the impact she’s had on Ghanaian society. “I believe I have touched the life of every Ghanaian, and I want to say thank you to everyone. I am a living legend. Thank you very much,” she said with great joy.
The event’s top honor, Legendary Woman, was awarded to Madam Belinda Doris Arkorful, CEO of Linda Dor. Other honorees included the gospel duo Tagoe Sisters, Afi Amoro, CEO of Jandel, and Hajia Hawa Meizongo, CEO of Silverline Productions.
