The Trade and Industry Minister, Kwabena Tahir (KT) Hammond, has addressed public concerns regarding an alleged altercation in Parliament on December 22, 2023, refuting accusations that he physically assaulted Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh.
The incident sparked varied reactions after a viral video depicted the Trade Minister seemingly engaging in a physical altercation with his colleague lawmaker. KT Hammond, also the Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, spoke to reporters at Adansi Asokwa, dismissing claims that he slapped and pushed away Frank Annoh Dompreh during parliamentary proceedings.
Emphasizing that he has been taken out of context, KT Hammond expressed bewilderment at the frequent misrepresentation of his thoughts and comments without consideration for their substance. He stated that misquoting him has subjected him to unwarranted criticism from various segments of the public.
Providing his account of the parliamentary session on December 22, where discussions and voting on the president’s appointment of judges were underway, KT Hammond clarified that he was gesturing to address time constraints while contributing. He asserted that he merely made gestures to the Chief Whip to allow him to express his viewpoint within the time constraints, denying any act of physical aggression.
Contrary to allegations, the Adansi Asokwa lawmaker asserted that he is not a violent individual, highlighting his lack of any history of violence or involvement in violent incidents. KT Hammond further emphasized his close relationship with Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh Dompreh in politics and Parliament, categorically stating that he would never react violently towards him.
