The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection strongly denounced the severe mistreatment of a woman in the Upper East Region. In a statement dated Tuesday, June 13, the Ministry emphasized that violence against women and girls should never be justified or tolerated, regardless of the circumstances or the perpetrators involved. They highlighted the detrimental impact of such violence on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being and development of women and girls, emphasizing that this behavior cannot be accepted. The Ministry condemned the cruel, brutal, and barbaric act inflicted upon the young lady, stressing that it flagrantly violated her human rights and dignity and is punishable by law.

In the widely circulated video on social media, a group of villagers, including elderly women, men, girls, and children, gathered around the victim who was sitting on the ground, covered in dirt, and completely naked except for a bra. The villagers expressed their outrage about some alleged wrongdoing committed by the girl. The footage showed onlookers pressuring her to lie on her back, forcibly spreading her legs, and filming her intimate areas. They then removed her bra, leaving her completely naked on the ground. A person struck her with what appeared to be a crude weapon, causing blood to cover her forehead and part of her face. Subsequently, she was compelled to flee the village and seek refuge in what seemed to be a desolate jungle.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has apprehended four suspects, Awizore Amolt, Akolbila Asorwogo, Atibila Aladago, and Akolbila Ben, in relation to the viral video depicting the inhumane and degrading treatment of the female victim by a group of individuals. The arrests took place during a police intelligence operation in the early hours of Tuesday, June 13, 2023, following a preliminary investigation into the video. The four suspects are currently in police custody, cooperating with the investigation, while efforts are underway to apprehend other accomplices and ensure they face legal consequences.
