The Minority in Parliament has successfully intervened to prevent an attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at the MP’s residence in Spintex, Accra.
The attempted arrest is reportedly linked to recent allegations made by Rev. Fordjour, who claimed that two suspicious aircraft landed at Kotoka International Airport carrying illicit drugs and cash. While government officials have categorically dismissed the claims as unfounded, the Minority insists that the NIB’s actions are both unlawful and politically motivated.
Addressing the media, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the attempted arrest, calling it an act of intimidation and a direct attack on parliamentary oversight.
“We stood firm to protect our colleague from what we consider harassment and intimidation,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “The NIB’s actions are an attack on parliamentary oversight and an attempt to suppress voices that raise legitimate concerns about national security and accountability.”
The Minority is demanding a comprehensive explanation from the NIB and has called on the Speaker of Parliament to intervene, stressing that Members of Parliament must not be targeted without due process.
Reaffirming their commitment to democratic governance, the caucus urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant and stand firm in defense of the rule of law and the rights of elected representatives.
