In an effort to advocate for fair compensation, Mobile Money (MoMo) agents across Ghana have jointly announced a temporary measure, effective December 1, 2023, limiting cash withdrawals to a maximum of GH¢1,000 per transaction.

The decision, communicated through a joint statement by four MoMo Associations—Northern MoMo Agents Association of Ghana (NOMAAG), Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG), Mobile Money Agents Association Ghana (MMAAG), and ABAG—aims to draw attention to the agents’ concerns regarding inadequate compensation for their services.

The temporary measure is not intended to inconvenience customers but rather to emphasize the need for a sustainable business model for MoMo agents. The Associations highlighted that the one-month period is designated for continued engagement with service providers to address concerns related to commission reviews. If no favorable adjustment occurs within this period, the Associations warned of implementing further action plans.

Calling on all stakeholders, including customers, the Associations sought support for their efforts to achieve fair compensation for MoMo agents. They stressed that the sustainability of MoMo services in Ghana relies on establishing a fair and equitable system for all involved parties.

While capping cash withdrawals may impact MoMo users, especially those conducting larger transactions, the Associations expressed hope that customers would understand the rationale behind this temporary measure and back their pursuit of fair compensation.

The MoMo sector has witnessed substantial growth in Ghana, becoming a vital component of the country’s financial landscape. MoMo agents play a crucial role in facilitating transactions, underscoring the significance of addressing their compensation concerns.
