The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) carried out a major operation in the early hours of Friday aimed at removing street children and their guardians from key commercial areas in Kaneshie and Abossey Okai.
According to officials, the initiative is part of a broader national effort to tackle streetism, enhance public safety, and enforce immigration regulations in urban centers.
Immigration officers, accompanied by enforcement vehicles, were seen patrolling major intersections and sidewalks, particularly around Abossey Okai—a busy hub known for its auto parts trade. Officers engaged with groups of women and children, many believed to be foreign nationals, before escorting them for further screening and processing.
The operation, described as extensive and well-coordinated, is targeting the increasing presence of street-dwelling minors in high-traffic areas of Accra, where they often beg for alms from motorists and pedestrians.
A spokesperson for the GIS said the exercise aims to both decongest urban spaces and combat child exploitation, especially among undocumented migrants.
