The spokesperson for the New Force Movement has been granted bail in the sum of GH20,000 and is required to report to the police three times per week.

Ms. Shalimar Abbiusi, a Belgian national, was detained by the National Investigation Bureau following an invitation as part of the Bureau’s initiative to identify individuals associated with the movement.

Ms. Abbiusi, who had been called for questioning on Monday, December 4, 2023, has remained in custody since, as reported by the movement.

Facing charges of fraudulently obtaining a student visa in Ghana through false representations, Ms. Abbiusi appeared before the Kaneshie District Court on Monday and was subsequently granted bail.

Outside the court, numerous followers of the movement gathered to express their support for Ms. Abbiusi. Adorned in the movement’s colors, supporters brandished posters and chanted slogans in favor of their spokesperson.

On Friday, December 8, the same judge remanded her into legal custody, with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) being the first to press charges. The court allowed the prosecution a few days to conclude its investigation and remanded the accused individual to legal custody, with an appearance scheduled for Monday, December 11, 2023.

During the proceedings, the accused’s lawyer, Mr. Jamal Tonzua, argued that the GIS intended to infringe upon his client’s rights and emphasized her entitlement to a fair trial under Ghana’s Constitution. He contended that the GIS should have completed its investigation before bringing the case to court. Mr. Tonzua requested bail for his client, asserting that she posed no flight risk, given that her passport was registered with GIS, enabling them to monitor her whereabouts. Additionally, he mentioned that the defendants had credible individuals ready to act as sureties.
