New NPP Leader Criteria

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has voiced his belief the party should avoid selecting individuals who have failed in the Akufo-Addo administration as leaders for the upcoming 2024 elections.

During his campaign launch on Tuesday, the former spokesperson for President John Agyekum Kufuor emphasized the significance of choosing candidates capable of effectively tackling the nation’s challenges.

“Despite achieving successes in healthcare, infrastructure development, tourism, and education, the Akufo-Addo government has faced difficulties fulfilling specific objectives.

“Our initial goal was to reduce reliance on Western aid, enthusiastically promoting the concept of Ghana Beyond Aid. However, today we find ourselves in a weakened position, seeking assistance from the International Monetary Fund.

“Presently, Ghana serves as an example of what not to do. While the international climate may have been unfavorable, we cannot ignore the alarming rates of inflation experienced by our country. These are clear indicators of economic distress, and we must confront these facts. We have witnessed the distressing sight of our pensioners protesting at the Finance Ministry because of a painful debt exchange.

“Our party, the NPP, cannot afford to nominate those who led us into this situation and because of the Ghanaian people to support them in the 2024 elections. We require a fresh face, someone untainted, a leader who can reconnect with our supporters and earn the trust of the Ghanaian people. With humility, I present myself, Kwabena Agyepong, as the bearer of hope for a new beginning in Ghana.”

Mr. Agyepong is likely to compete against a former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, former Member of Parliament for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, former Minister of State, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

Other potential contenders include Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General and MP for Essikado-Ketan Joe Ghartey, and businessman and energy expert Kwadwo Poku.
