The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced a GH₵500 reward for individuals who provide credible information leading to the identification of sanitation offenders. The initiative targets activities such as dumping waste into drains, littering, open defecation, and other violations of environmental by-laws, as part of renewed efforts to improve sanitation across the city.
According to the Mayor, the reward system is designed to encourage active public participation in enforcing Assembly regulations. He assured residents that all reported offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, stressing that community involvement is essential in tackling the city’s sanitation challenges.
The announcement was made during an inspection tour of the Kaneshie area, particularly Dzorshie Crescent, where the Mayor assessed the causes of persistent flooding and the condition of major drainage systems. He indicated that steps are already being taken to address the situation, noting that a contract has been awarded to carry out necessary interventions.
Michael Kpakpo Allotey attributed recurring flooding in parts of the city largely to poor sanitation practices, especially the indiscriminate disposal of waste into drains. He explained that materials such as plastics and discarded clothing often accumulate in gutters, blocking the free flow of water and increasing the risk of flooding. In many cases, waste dumped in one area travels downstream and clogs drainage systems elsewhere, posing significant threats to lives and property.
He emphasized that the development and safety of Accra depend on the collective actions of its residents and called for stronger collaboration between the Assembly and the public. Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving sanitation and infrastructure, the Mayor urged residents to comply with regulations, report offenders, and support ongoing efforts to build a cleaner, safer, and more resilient city.
