Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, convened a virtual meeting with Ghanaian diplomatic missions on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to coordinate measures aimed at protecting Ghanaian nationals following escalating tensions across the Middle East.
The emergency meeting brought together Ghana’s Heads of Mission and Consuls-General stationed in several countries in the region, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Turkey. The discussions focused on safety measures, evacuation readiness, and support for Ghanaian citizens living or traveling in the affected areas.
During the meeting, the Foreign Minister confirmed that, as of the time of the briefing, no Ghanaian national had been reported killed or injured as a result of the ongoing regional tensions.
Diplomatic missions also reported that a comprehensive database has been compiled to track Ghanaian nationals in the region. The database includes long-term residents, short-term visitors, and travelers currently in transit through the affected countries. Officials say the information will help authorities respond quickly if conditions worsen.
As part of precautionary planning, Ghana’s embassies and consulates have been instructed to identify citizens who may wish to return home. Those requesting evacuation will be considered by the government should a full-scale evacuation become necessary.
Some missions have already begun assisting Ghanaian nationals who wish to relocate temporarily to safer areas, including facilitating travel through strategic border crossings where possible.
The meeting followed earlier actions taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after security concerns intensified in the region. The government previously confirmed the evacuation of all Ghanaian embassy staff from Tehran and the temporary closure of the Ghanaian mission there.
Minister Ablakwa also recently announced new passport security measures aimed at preventing the fraudulent acquisition of Ghanaian passports by non-nationals, particularly after the country secured new visa waiver arrangements with several partners.
Ghanaian authorities say they will continue monitoring developments in the region closely while maintaining communication with citizens and diplomatic missions to ensure their safety.
