FDA on Food Hygiene Permit

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced that all food service businesses operating without a valid Food Hygiene Permit will be shut down effective February 1, 2026.

The directive applies to a broad range of food establishments, including restaurants, lounges, hotels, chop bars, snack bars, bakeries, food vans, event catering services, online food businesses, as well as canteens in schools, hospitals, and offices.

According to the Authority, the enforcement forms part of its mandate to protect public health and is grounded in Section 130 (1) of the Public Health Act, 2012, which requires all food-related operations to be registered and to comply with approved hygiene standards.

The FDA stated that any business found operating without the requisite permit will remain closed until it regularizes its operations and obtains the necessary approval. Food service operators have therefore been urged to take immediate steps to secure their permits to avoid interruptions to their activities.

The Authority encouraged operators seeking clarification or assistance to contact the FDA directly, stressing that the measure is intended to protect public health. “Your well-being, our priority,” the FDA emphasized.
