The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Nnenna Oti, has presented the university’s symbolic “FUTO Macho Man” honor to Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, in recognition of his achievements and contributions to industry and society.
The presentation took place after Dangote delivered a lecture titled “Enterprise, Leadership and Service to Humanity,” which formed part of the university’s 37th Public Lecture series. The event brought together students, faculty, and members of the wider academic community for a conversation on leadership, entrepreneurship, and national development.
The “FUTO Macho Man” symbol is a highly regarded icon on campus, representing strength, resilience, and a strong “can-do” spirit associated with the university’s technology-driven culture. In addition to this honor, Dangote was also presented with the Ikenga, a revered Igbo cultural symbol that signifies achievement, success, and personal accomplishment.
As part of his visit, Dangote announced a donation of $550,000 to support the university’s development initiatives. The contribution is expected to aid ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, research capacity, and academic programs at the institution.
Dangote also commissioned the ACE-Fuels ELECTROLAB-X facility—an advanced Electrochemical Laboratory for Accelerated Breakthroughs and Exponential Energy Technologies—located on the Owerri campus. The new laboratory is designed to support cutting-edge research in energy technologies and innovation.
The event also featured a personal moment of appreciation from the student body. A student, Albert Ifeanyi, presented Dangote with a hand-drawn portrait, a gesture that drew admiration from attendees and highlighted the inspiration his visit provided to students.
Overall, the occasion underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and industry, while celebrating leadership, innovation, and service as key drivers of national progress.
