William Agyapong, Chief of the Defence Staff, has announced the establishment of a new welfare initiative known as the Ghana Armed Forces Trust Fund to support personnel and their families. The announcement was made on April 30, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen social protection within the Ghana Armed Forces.
The fund is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to families of personnel who lose their lives in active service, helping them manage urgent expenses while awaiting official pensions and gratuities. Under the scheme, bereaved families can receive up to GH₵55,000 as emergency support.
The Chief of Defence Staff also outlined several improvements to existing welfare structures during a goodwill visit to veterans in Kumasi. One of the key changes is a significant increase in payouts under the military’s Benevolent Fund, which has been raised from GH₵500 to GH₵10,000.
In addition, spousal pension payments will now be extended from three months to six months following discussions with the Armed Forces Council, providing families with a longer financial cushion during difficult transitions.
The new trust fund will also support personnel injured in the line of duty, offering a relief payment equivalent to 30 percent of the assured sum. For service members who leave the military without making any claims, 30 percent of their total contributions to the fund will be refunded.
Beyond financial support, the military leadership emphasized ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and healthcare for personnel and veterans. The completion of the Afari Military Hospital is expected to enhance access to quality medical care, particularly for those in the middle and northern regions of the country.
Plans are also underway to modernize military housing, including the redevelopment of Burma Camp into high-rise residential units. Construction of an initial 200 housing units is expected to begin following a fundraising initiative launched earlier in 2026.
The new measures reflect a broader commitment by the Ghana Armed Forces to improve the welfare, safety, and long-term support systems for both serving personnel and veterans.
