The Ghana Airports Company Limited has completed corrective work on newly installed signage at Accra International Airport after facing strong public criticism over the initial installation that followed the airport’s recent name change.

The controversy began after the government officially renamed the airport from Kotoka International Airport back to Accra International Airport on February 23, 2026. New signage reflecting the change was unveiled on March 20, 2026, but the installation quickly sparked backlash from the public.

Social media users pointed out that the previous lettering associated with the old name had not been completely removed. In some areas, traces of the letter “K” from “Kotoka” were reportedly still visible behind or beside the new “Accra” inscription, particularly under certain lighting conditions at night. The images circulated widely online, with many critics describing the work as poorly executed and calling for immediate corrections.

In response to the criticism, the Ghana Airports Company Limited acknowledged that the installation had not yet been fully completed. The company subsequently removed photographs of the signage from its social media platforms and announced that additional work would be carried out to resolve the issue.

Maintenance teams worked overnight on March 21, 2026, to finalize the repainting and restoration of the signage. Following the repairs, the airport’s name now appears clearly as “Accra International Airport,” with no visible traces of the previous lettering.

The renaming of the airport has been part of a broader effort by the government to restore its original designation from 1958. The facility was renamed in 1969 after Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a military officer involved in the 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana’s first president. The change back to Accra International Airport was intended to align the facility with its global recognition while addressing longstanding debates over the historical legacy associated with the former name.

Despite the change in designation, the airport’s international aviation identifier remains unchanged, and the ICAO airport code ACC continues to be used for operational and navigation purposes.
