Ghana and Egypt Seek Closer Defense, Pharmaceutical and Infrastructure Cooperation

Ghana and Egypt Seek Closer Defense

Ghana and Egypt have pledged to deepen cooperation in defence, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure following talks between President John Dramani Mahama and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

A statement issued by Ghana’s Presidency on October 5 said the meeting took place alongside the Eighth African Union Mid-Year Coordination Summit and the inaugural Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt.

The leaders discussed simplifying the registration of Egyptian medicines in Ghana to improve healthcare access and encourage investment. Mahama also proposed stronger security cooperation through intelligence sharing, training and counter-terrorism initiatives, citing Egypt’s defence industry as a source of expertise.

Infrastructure discussions covered social housing and Ghana’s interest in learning from Egypt’s New Administrative Capital as it develops plans for a new capital city. The talks also addressed support for the Sahel-Gulf of Guinea Accord.

Both presidents recalled the pan-African relationship forged by Kwame Nkrumah and Gamal Abdel Nasser. Mahama thanked Egypt for supporting Ghana’s United Nations resolution on reparations and requested continued backing.

The Presidency’s account outlined areas for further cooperation but did not announce a signed implementation agreement, project budgets or construction timelines.
