
John Dramani Mahama and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have agreed to deepen cooperation between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, with a strong focus on the energy sector and sustainable development.
The discussions took place on Wednesday, May 5, 2026, on the sidelines of the Make it in the Emirates 2026 summit held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. During the meeting, the two leaders explored opportunities for the UAE to invest in oil and gas storage infrastructure in Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen energy collaboration.
Beyond conventional fossil fuels, both leaders emphasized the importance of diversifying energy sources and building a more sustainable energy future. They discussed strategies aimed at reducing dependence on crude oil, including increased investment in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and solar energy initiatives.
The meeting also touched on broader bilateral relations, with discussions focusing on trade, investment, renewable energy, innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation in these areas to create long-term economic opportunities for their citizens.
In addition, the leaders addressed the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and acknowledged the challenging role of the UAE within the region. They expressed hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict involving the United States and Iran, noting that stability would allow the international community to redirect attention toward development and innovation.
Concluding the meeting, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reaffirmed the strong historical ties between the two countries and described Ghana as a peaceful and stable democratic partner with significant potential for collaboration. Both leaders expressed confidence that the renewed partnership would lead to meaningful progress in trade, investment, and sustainable energy development for the mutual benefit of both nations.
