Ghana’s Cabinet has approved a new electronic visa system, with the e-visa policy set to officially launch on May 25, 2026. The rollout is timed to coincide with Africa Day and forms part of a broader government plan to modernize immigration services, promote tourism, and strengthen regional integration.
Under the new system, all African nationals will be eligible to obtain Ghana e-visas free of charge starting from the launch date. The move replaces the previous $150 visa-on-arrival fee that applied to holders of African Union passports.
Although the fee has been removed for African travelers, the policy is described as a free visa regime rather than a visa-free arrangement. This means travelers will still be required to apply online before travel and complete mandatory security screening before approval is granted.
For visitors traveling from outside Africa, the new e-visa system will still include fees. Reports indicate that charges for non-African applicants are expected to be around $250, depending on visa type and duration.
The digital platform is also expected to strengthen border security. Authorities say the system will be integrated with international crime databases and the Advanced Passenger Information system, allowing real-time background checks and improved screening of incoming travelers.
Officials believe the e-visa platform will significantly improve efficiency by removing the need for many applicants to visit embassies or consulates in person. The simplified process is expected to make travel easier for tourists, investors, and business travelers seeking entry into Ghana.
The policy was first outlined by President John Dramani Mahama on April 2, 2026, during a state visit by the President of Zimbabwe. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, later confirmed that Cabinet had given final approval over the weekend.
Government officials say the initiative positions Ghana as a leading voice in Pan-African integration by making travel easier for fellow Africans while still maintaining modern security standards.
The new e-visa system is expected to boost tourism, increase business travel, and strengthen Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most open and forward-looking destinations.
