Ghana has taken a significant step toward strengthening its air capabilities after ordering four new multi-mission helicopters from Airbus Helicopters for the Ministry of Defence.

The acquisition forms part of the government’s broader defense modernization program and is expected to enhance the operational capacity of the Ghana Air Force across a range of missions.

The order includes three different Airbus helicopter models designed for multiple operational roles. Two Airbus H175M helicopters will serve as the main multi-mission platforms. These aircraft are designed to handle tasks such as troop transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services, and disaster relief missions.

The fleet will also include one Airbus ACH175, a corporate-configured version of the H175 that will primarily be used for VIP and official personnel transport. In addition, Ghana has ordered one Airbus ACH160 helicopter, considered one of the most technologically advanced helicopters in the world. The aircraft features dozens of patented technologies and will also be used for high-level transport duties.

The contract for the helicopters was awarded on January 15, 2026. On March 5, 2026, the Ghana Air Force received the first aircraft under the agreement when a newly acquired H175 helicopter arrived in Accra.

The helicopter was flown from Marignane in France, traveling through Spain and parts of Northwest Africa before reaching Ghana.

The purchase marks the return of Airbus Helicopters to Ghana’s defense aviation sector and positions the country among the leading operators of modern super-medium and medium-twin helicopters in West Africa. The new aircraft are expected to significantly improve Ghana’s ability to respond to emergencies, conduct rescue operations, and support national security missions.
