Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei were honored with the United Nations Peacekeeping Medal during a joint ceremony held in Athony.
The ceremony recognized members of Ghana Battalion Four (GHANBATT 4) and Ghana Level II Hospital 4 (GHANMED 4) for their dedicated service in the disputed Abyei Region, where the mission works to maintain peace and stability between Sudan and South Sudan.
The event was reviewed by the Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander, Ganesh Kumar Shrestha, and attended by a high-level delegation from Ghana led by the Chief of the Army Staff, Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu.
During the ceremony, GHANBATT 4 was praised for its proactive efforts in protecting civilians. The unit was specifically commended for its intervention during clashes at Athony Junction, where Ghanaian troops helped rescue hundreds of civilians caught in the violence.
GHANMED 4 was also recognized for its vital humanitarian contributions. Under the leadership of Commanding Officer Kwesi Okumanin Nsaful, the medical unit provided essential healthcare and veterinary services to both peacekeepers and residents in the region.
In addition to the main Ghanaian units, the medal ceremony also honored 28 staff officers as well as personnel from the United Nations Police and the United Nations Military Observers who serve within the mission.
The Joint Medal Day celebration coincided with Ghana’s 69th Independence Day, which was also commemorated by Ghanaian peacekeeping contingents deployed in other missions around the world, including GHANCOY 4 serving in Guinea-Bissau.
