The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the United States has been formally notified that Lincoln University has rescinded its earlier decision to confer an honorary doctorate (honoris causa) on the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama.

According to the communication received, the decision follows concerns raised about the President’s perceived position on LGBTQ+ issues, particularly in relation to Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently under consideration by Parliament.

The Embassy has expressed strong disappointment over the development, noting that the honour had been formally offered and accepted in good faith, with all necessary logistical and programme arrangements completed ahead of the scheduled ceremony. It further emphasised that the withdrawal comes at a late stage, at a time when President Mahama is already in the United States in anticipation of participating in the event.

In its response, the Embassy underscored that the concerns cited relate to an ongoing legislative process within Ghana’s democratic system and should not be interpreted as the unilateral position of any individual.

While recognising the prerogative of Lincoln University to act in accordance with its institutional values, the Embassy described both the timing and manner of the decision as regrettable. It also highlighted that President John Dramani Mahama has consistently demonstrated leadership rooted in democratic principles, respect for human rights, and a commitment to inclusive dialogue on complex social issues.

The Embassy therefore considers it unfortunate that the decision was taken without prior engagement or an opportunity for clarification.

Despite the setback, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement and expressed hope that the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Lincoln University—notably its historic association with Kwame Nkrumah—will continue to be guided by mutual respect and understanding.
