A luxury Boeing 747-8 gifted by the Qatari government to the United States Department of Defense is being prepared to serve as a temporary Air Force One aircraft for President Donald Trump, triggering major infrastructure upgrades at Joint Base Andrews.
The massive aircraft, often described as a “flying palace” because of its luxury interior and advanced design, has created significant logistical challenges for the U.S. Air Force due to its enormous size. Officials say the current Air Force One hangars at Joint Base Andrews were originally built for the smaller and aging VC-25A presidential fleet and are unable to properly accommodate the larger Boeing 747-8 platform.
To address the issue, the military has moved forward with the use of a highly specialized hangar complex valued at approximately $320 million. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to support the aircraft’s maintenance, security requirements, and classified communications systems while preparing it for presidential operations.
The expansion project has also reshaped portions of the base itself. Due to the scale of the hangar and supporting infrastructure, planners were reportedly forced to reduce and build into parts of the installation’s on-site golf course to create enough operational space for the new aviation complex.
The aircraft has already undergone an extensive $400 million retrofit aimed at transforming the commercial luxury jet into a secure presidential transport platform. The overhaul included the installation of advanced military defense systems, encrypted communications technology, and specialized presidential operational capabilities required for Air Force One missions.
Although parts of the original Qatari royal interior were modified during the conversion process, several luxury features remain intact. Reports indicate that Arabic-language exit signs and royal-themed artwork were removed, while premium leather seating, lavish lounge areas, and decorative faux-library bookcases were preserved. Presidential seals and American-themed modifications have since been added throughout the aircraft’s interior.
The United States Air Force has also confirmed that the aircraft is receiving a new red, white, and blue presidential livery as preparations continue for official service. According to current timelines, the jet is expected to be fully operational by the summer of 2026.
Officials say the Boeing 747-8 will function as a temporary bridge aircraft until Boeing completes delivery of the long-delayed next-generation VC-25B presidential aircraft, which are now projected to enter service between 2028 and 2029.
