The Parliament of Ghana has officially confirmed the detention of Kwame Ohene Frimpong at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands, following reports of his arrest upon arrival in the European country.
In a formal press statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the House acknowledged that it had been officially notified about the lawmaker’s detention by authorities in the Netherlands. The statement marks the first official confirmation from Parliament regarding the incident that has generated widespread public attention.
According to Parliament, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, together with parliamentary leadership, is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather comprehensive information surrounding the circumstances of the arrest and the legal processes involved.
The statement further indicated that Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the Netherlands are expected to provide the detained legislator with the necessary consular assistance as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
Reports surrounding the incident suggest that Kwame Ohene Frimpong departed Ghana on Saturday evening and arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on Sunday morning. Security officials reportedly intercepted the MP shortly after his arrival, before he could complete standard immigration clearance procedures.
Although Parliament’s official communication did not disclose any specific charges against the legislator, law enforcement sources cited by local media reports claim the arrest forms part of a broader international financial crime investigation.
The alleged investigation is reportedly connected to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and centers on an alleged $32 million international fraud operation involving accusations of money laundering and romance scams.
Sources familiar with the case indicate that the multinational investigation has been ongoing for more than a year and involves collaboration between multiple international law enforcement agencies across different jurisdictions.
The development has sparked significant public and political discussion in Ghana, with many closely monitoring further updates from Dutch authorities, Ghana’s diplomatic mission, and Parliament regarding the status of the MP and any potential legal proceedings.
